Two Injections Restore Memory in Alzheimer’s Mice

A new nanogel treatment restored memory and helped regrow neurons in mice with Alzheimer’s after two injections.

A new experimental approach to Alzheimer’s disease has shown striking results in mice. Researchers developed a targeted nanogel that carries antibodies into brain cells called astrocytes and removes a protein called PTBP1. The treatment can push some astrocytes toward becoming neuron-like cells, helping rebuild neural activity in damaged brain regions. In Alzheimer’s mouse models, the researchers reported improved learning and memory along with increased signs of neurogenesis after treatment. The work also produced encouraging results in human brain organoids, but it has not yet been shown to reverse Alzheimer’s disease in people. The study was published in Cell Biomaterials in August 2026. The discussion around the research highlights a major scientific challenge: promising results in mice can fail to translate into effective human treatments, especially for a complex disease involving multiple forms of brain damage.
