New research from the University of Massachusetts Amherst suggests that heavy alcohol use combined with chronic stress during early adulthood may leave lasting changes in the brain. The study used mice and found that animals exposed to both stress and alcohol later showed less cognitive flexibility and were more likely to return to drinking when stressed, even after a long period without alcohol. The effects were stronger when stress and alcohol occurred together than when either factor was present alone. Researchers focused on the locus coeruleus, a small brain region involved in stress responses and adaptive decision making. In the mice exposed to alcohol and stress, this region showed changes that appeared to interfere with its ability to return to a normal state after stressful events. The researchers also found increased oxidative stress, a form of cellular damage associated with several forms of brain disease. The findings are important but should not be treated as proof that drinking in your twenties permanently damages human brains in the same way. This was an animal study involving heavy alcohol exposure paired with chronic stress. Human research is still needed to determine whether the same changes occur, how long they last, and how strongly they affect people later in life. The study also does not show that every person who drinks in early adulthood will experience lasting cognitive problems.
