Speaking Multiple Languages Linked to Younger-Looking Brain Activity

New research suggests multilingual people can have brain activity that looks younger than their age, with the biggest gap seen in people who speak four languages.

New research presented at the FENS Forum 2026 suggests that speaking several languages is associated with younger-looking patterns of brain aging. Researchers built an AI-based brain aging model using magnetoencephalography, or MEG, which measures magnetic signals produced by brain activity. They trained the model on 728 people and then applied it to a separate group of 144 people from the Basque region of Spain who spoke between one and four languages. The estimated brain-age gap grew with the number of languages spoken: about six years for people speaking two languages, seven years for three languages, and roughly 13 years for four languages compared with monolingual participants. Earlier learning and higher language proficiency were also associated with a stronger difference. The findings are best understood as an association rather than proof that learning languages directly makes the brain younger. The researchers adjusted for factors including age, sex, and education, but other influences such as lifestyle, social engagement, and background could still contribute. The work was presented at a scientific conference, so the exact size of the effect should be treated as an early finding rather than a settled medical fact. Even so, it adds to research exploring how demanding mental activities across a lifetime may relate to brain resilience and aging.
