A new theoretical paper proposes that human evolution may have been influenced not only by physical survival and cooperation, but also by the ability to use language creatively. The idea is that quick wit, humor, vivid word combinations, and verbal competition could have given early humans social and mating advantages. The theory focuses on very simple forms of early grammar, including basic verb and noun combinations that still appear in modern languages. These compact expressions can create vivid descriptions, nicknames, insults, and jokes, giving language a social role beyond simply passing along information. According to the proposal, people who were especially effective at using words could compete with rivals, attract partners, build status, or defuse conflict without relying entirely on physical aggression.
