Early-Life Sugar Rationing Linked to Lower Cancer Risk Decades Later

A UK study found that people exposed to less sugar during their first two years later had lower rates of five cancers.

A study of more than 64,000 people in the UK explored whether sugar exposure during the first 1,000 days of life, from conception through age two, was linked to health decades later. Researchers used the end of postwar sugar rationing in Britain in September 1953 as a natural experiment. People born at different points around that change experienced different levels of sugar restriction during early development. The researchers found that longer exposure to rationing was associated with lower rates of five cancers in later life: liver, rectal, prostate, lung and breast cancer. The reported differences were largest for liver cancer and smaller for breast cancer. The study also found longer telomeres, a marker sometimes used when studying biological ageing, among people with greater early-life rationing exposure. Another notable finding was that those exposed to rationing still reported lower sugar intake and somewhat healthier, more varied diets decades later. That raises an important possibility: early food exposure may influence eating habits that persist into adulthood, which could contribute to later health differences. The findings are intriguing, but they do not prove that reducing sugar during infancy directly prevents cancer. Britain’s rationing period involved many changes beyond sugar, and the study is based on a historical population rather than a randomized trial. The researchers therefore describe the work as a natural experiment, while further studies are needed to determine how much of the observed difference is specifically related to early sugar exposure rather than other features of the postwar environment.
