Living Near Dry Cleaners Linked to Higher Parkinson’s Odds in Older Adults

A U.S. study found older adults living closer to dry cleaners had higher odds of Parkinson’s, with the strongest link within about 500 feet.

A large U.S. study found an association between living near dry-cleaning businesses and Parkinson’s disease in adults age 67 and older. Researchers compared 180,982 people newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s with more than 18.8 million people without the disease, using residential distance from dry cleaners as an indirect measure of possible environmental exposure. The closest group, people living within about 500 feet, had 14% higher odds of Parkinson’s than those living four to five miles away. The association was stronger for Parkinson’s involving gait and balance problems, where the odds were 23% higher in the closest group. The study does not prove that living near a dry cleaner causes Parkinson’s. Distance was used as a proxy for exposure, and the researchers could not directly measure how much trichloroethylene or other chemicals each person encountered. Trichloroethylene, or TCE, has been used in dry cleaning and other industrial settings, and earlier research has examined links between chlorinated solvents and neurological disease. Older studies have also found evidence of solvent exposure in buildings associated with dry cleaning, while research on occupational exposure has produced mixed results. The new findings showed a dose-response pattern, meaning the association was generally stronger at shorter distances. Researchers also reported regional differences, with some of the strongest associations appearing in parts of the South, the Midwest, Texas, Southern California, and the New York metropolitan region. Those geographic patterns need further investigation because proximity alone cannot identify which chemical, exposure route, or other factor might be responsible. The discussion around the research also highlights why environmental exposure studies can be complicated. Dry-cleaning chemicals can persist in soil and groundwater, while volatile compounds can also move through air and indoor spaces. At the same time, modern cleanup and building controls can reduce exposure at contaminated properties. The study therefore adds to an ongoing research question rather than establishing a simple cause-and-effect explanation.
