A major 2026 study found evidence that major depressive disorder is linked to a stalled process of making new neurons in the adult hippocampus, a brain region involved in memory and emotional responses. Researchers analyzed a large collection of human brain cells using several molecular techniques and found changes not only in neuron growth, but also in communication between brain cells, cellular energy, stress responses, inflammation, and the flexibility of hippocampal circuits. The findings may help explain why depression can be associated with negative memory bias and difficulty separating new experiences from painful past experiences. The study does not show that reduced neurogenesis alone causes depression, and the researchers note that the biology of the disorder is complex. Instead, the work provides evidence for a broader biological picture in which several processes may interact. The researchers hope this kind of molecular mapping could eventually help identify different biological forms of depression and guide more targeted treatments.
