Brain Stimulation Helps Socially Anxious People Control Avoidance

A new study suggests that carefully timed, noninvasive electrical stimulation may help people with high social anxiety override the urge to avoid situations that feel threatening. The experiment involved 49 adults with high social anxiety who completed tasks designed to make them act against their usual emotional impulses while researchers measured brain activity. The researchers used alternating electrical stimulation at two brain areas involved in cognitive control and movement. The goal was not simply to activate one area, but to make the activity between the two regions more synchronized. During the synchronized stimulation condition, participants made fewer mistakes when they had to reverse their normal approach or avoidance response. Brain imaging also showed stronger communication between the targeted regions and changes involving the amygdala, which is closely involved in emotional responses. The findings are interesting because avoidance can provide immediate relief while also making social anxiety harder to overcome. Treatments such as exposure therapy already rely on helping people face feared situations, but intense automatic avoidance can make that difficult. A technique that temporarily improves control over those impulses could eventually be studied as a way to support existing therapies. There are important limits. This was a small experimental study, and the stimulation was tested during controlled tasks rather than ordinary social situations. The researchers also found substantial differences between individuals in how strongly their brains responded. The study does not show that brain stimulation is a proven treatment for social anxiety, and it remains unclear whether the behavioral effects would last after stimulation stops. Larger studies will be needed to determine whether the approach can produce lasting benefits in everyday life.
